Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi (1990)

Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi (1931-2009) was a Pakistani politician who briefly served as the caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan in 1990. He was born on August 14, 1931, in Karachi, British India (now in Pakistan).

Jatoi belonged to a politically influential family from Sindh province. He joined politics in the 1960s and was associated with various political parties throughout his career, including the Pakistan Muslim League (PML) and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).

In 1990, Jatoi was appointed as the caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan. His term was an interim period between the dismissal of Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s government and the subsequent general elections. As a caretaker Prime Minister, his role was to oversee the administration and ensure a smooth transition to the elected government.

Jatoi’s tenure was brief, lasting from August 6 to November 6, 1990. During this time, he focused on maintaining law and order and overseeing the preparations for the upcoming general elections. His government did not undertake significant policy reforms or introduce major initiatives due to the transitional nature of his role.

Following the general elections held in 1990, Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) emerged as the largest party, and Sharif became the Prime Minister of Pakistan. Jatoi returned to his political activities and continued to play a role in Pakistani politics.

Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi served as a federal minister in subsequent governments and held positions of leadership within his political party. He remained an active politician until his death on November 20, 2009, in Karachi, Pakistan.

Jatoi’s tenure as Prime Minister was relatively short and transitional, and his government did not have a significant policy impact. However, he played a role in overseeing a peaceful transition of power and facilitating the democratic process in Pakistan during a critical period.
